Akaka waterfall is the most impressive waterfall in the Hilo area and so easy to access, just 20 minuets outside of town. near the town of Honomu on the Hamakua coast of Hawaii.
Akaka falls is a state park , there is a short loop trail for a nice walk through the rain forest or you can take the shorter path directly to the waterfall and watch it cascading 442 ft to the bottom of the gorge. Take time to read the information boards and learn about the little goby fish “o’opu alamao’o” who climb the rocks behind the falls all the way the top when they are ready to procreate…amazing story, boggles the mind .
The day I took this image I had brought along a little step stool in order to shoot the full height of the waterfall, however a cute little five year old with the tightest ringlets ever decided she had better need of it than me. Next time I will go very early, while five year olds are still in bed.
