Waipio Valley has both historical and cultural significance in the story of Hawaii and its people. Once it was home to many of the rulers of Hawaii. Ancient burial caves are located in the sides of the steep cliffs and many kings were buried here. It is felt that because of their mana (divine peace) no harm will come to those who live in the valley. In spite of the devastating tsunami in 1946 and a terrible flood in 1979 no one in the valley died as a result of those events.
