Slow moving Pahoehoe lava flows fold upon themselves creating beautiful patterns and pod like structures. Cracks in the crust allow moisture from the mists and rains to enter. Soon seeds, blowing across the lava field find a new home and a place for regeneration. This is a favorite image; we had driven up Mauna Loa to experience the snow. After a little while we were chased down the mountain by a storm. The diminishing light seemed to isolate this little pod making it clearly visible. Some precarious parking and a little hike back up was well worth the effort.
